Pope Francis: stick with the new Mass…

Pope Francis, while he says “we must rediscover the reality of the Sacred Liturgy” also warns against “[looking]  back to nostalgic past tendencies or [wishing] to impose them again…”   Loosely translated, this seems to be saying, stick with the new Mass, and don’t hanker after the old…

So, it’s maybe time to remind ourselves of what, precisely, he means by “nostalgic past tendencies” and what precisely, he doesn’t want to “impose again”.  Take the few minutes necessary to watch the short video below and then share your answers to the two questions below…

Questions…

Since the liturgy of the Church is directed to God, to offer Him true worship / adoration, do you think He finds the Novus Ordo Missae acceptable and pleasing – does it achieve that central aim ?

How, in God’s eyes, do you think the Novus Ordo Missae compares to the Traditional Latin Mass (see video below)…

“When Mass is being celebrated, the sanctuary is filled with countless angels who adore the Divine Victim immolated on the altar.” – St. John Chrysostom (Bishop & Doctor of the Church).

  1. We are not at all nostalgic of the Tradition, moreover legitimate, of which we are deprived by bad pastors who in this way provoke without regret the disunion.
We have chosen to be Catholic exclusively and intend to remain so.
The official hierarchy of the Church is supposed to testify to the Faith and to transmit it as she committed herself at our baptism.
They change the liturgy in order to change the religion and that is not what we expect from those who are in charge of testifying…
For now, we are harvesting the rotten fruits of their imposture. They will disappear by extinction and maybe that is what they are looking for? They persecute what remains of true Catholics and want to leave behind a devastated Church…
There is no question of nostalgia in all this, it is about rights and justice and finally about salvation.
They operated with impunity a gigantic spiritual misappropriation and instead of letting them canonizing each other, they should have been revoked and anathematized.

    • Lionel,

I agree with you “We have chosen to be Catholic exclusively and intend to remain so.” That is the whole point.

I feel very sad about the new Mass now that I have a grasp of the key issues. Nobody watching the video of the traditional Latin Mass could possibly doubt that it is that Mass which is most pleasing to God. There’s just no contest, IMHO.

      • I agree without a doubt that the Traditional Mass is so much more relevant and real. Also although av only been attending it for 3 years the difference is amazing both in Silence and in respect. You never ( or very seldom) hear talking. I have yet to hear or see Kneelers being abused ( not once ) by being banged up and down. Also of course the absence of Alter Girls makes it again another thing. Then of course there is the Absence of Eucharistic Ministers again lots of whom are Women walking up the Alter in High Heels where is the respect. The icing on the cake of course is Kneeling down and receiving the Eucharist on the Tongue.
I think we all know the reason Pope Francis wants to be rid of the Latin Mass .

        • FOOF,

You have a way with words that never ceases to make me smile.

Below, is a video of the then Cardinal Bergoglio, who permitted a couple to dance the Tango at the end of his Mass. That the couple, who look to be of an age when they should have realised that this is – to say the least – inappropriate – didn’t think twice about committing this sacrilege, is one thing. That the future pope saw nothing wrong with it is something else x one zillion years…

      • Laura,

You are right to be sad – I feel that sadness when I’m with novus ordo attending Catholics who speak like Protestants about the Mass which nourished the Faith of saints and martyrs for centuries. It’s incredible. The Devil has had (and continues to have) a field day.

All that we are witnessing around us – from the clergy sexual abuse scandals to the promotion of LGBT propaganda in Catholic schools – stems from the withdrawal of grace that is a self-evident result of the introduction of the new Mass.

We don’t DO “new” in the Catholic Church: as Pope Saint Pius X said: “Far, far from our priests be the love of novelty.”

    • Lionel,

You are so right – the work of the Pope and Bishops is to preserve the Faith and the Liturgy and hand it on undiluted. Yet, something came over them at Vatican II and it wasn’t the Holy Spirit! Otherwise, why would some of the leading Cardinals have written to Pope Paul VI to express their fears that the new Mass “is, in whole and in part a striking departure from Catholic theology of the Mass”?

  2. My answer to Q1: How could a liturgy specifically designed to avoid offending heretics possibly be pleasing to God?

As for Q2, I can’t presume to be able to look through God’s eyes, but I wonder if He would equate the Novus Ordo with the worship of Baal.

The Traditional Mass is a re-presentation of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord. Since most of the prayers and rubrics that mark and refer to the key points in the Holy Triduum have been removed or altered, one must ask: the Novus Ordo is a re-presentation of what, exactly?

My answer to that question would be: it is a re-presentation of the treason of Luther and Cranmer. And Michael Davies’ books, among others, confirm that.

As for “nostalgia,” that has been a favorite pejorative of the modernists for years: it is their pathetic and failed attempt to equate the longing for the true Mass with nostalgia for old TV shows and old pop tunes. When I first became aware of the crisis in the Church, it was around the time Mel Gibson’s movie The Passion was released. There was a deliberate and extensive effort on the part of our Diocesan newspaper to discourage Catholics from attending this movie, and “nostalgia” for Tradition was one weapon in their arsenal. It was that subterfuge, among others, that caused me to start writing my old newsletter, targeting the source of that subterfuge: the Archbishop.

  3. Some time ago (last summer, to be specific) I had occasion to chat with a young Polish priest. The poor guy’s jaw dropped when I started lamenting about Vatican II and ‘what a disaster this has been for the Church’.

…’Oh, but the Church was guided in this direction by the Holy Spirit’…, he enthused. (Groan!).

Anyway, he listened intently when I opined that ‘countless souls had surely been lost since the ‘Novus Ordo’ had been introduced’. I gave him the last hard copy I had of the leaflet titled ‘Why The Traditional Latin Mass?’ (see https://www.olrl.org/new_mass/evils.shtml ) but couldn’t say whether he intends ever to proceed with it.

  4. I wonder if you could liken the appearance of the Novus Ordo to the fall of our first parents in Paradise. That is, the Church was warned repeatedly not to commit suicide through altering the faith in the liturgy (e.g. Pius XII), but the cabal of modernists did it anyway, Thus they ate the forbidden fruit of human respect and “dignity,” (a favorite buzzword of Vatican II), and caused the Church to fall into anarchy – even the anarchy of debased, perverted passions.

But how could there be any dignity apart from the tradition of the Catholic Faith?

  5. I happened to re-read Bella Dodd’s description of the infiltration of the Church by the Communists, and their desired goal, which was to “destroy the Faith through the promotion of a pseudo-religion: something that resembled Catholicism but was not the real thing.”

The Novus Ordo is the liturgy of that pseudo-religion, and all the Conciliar Popes have been its promoters and enforcers and models.

      • Petrus,

Here’s the whole quote, from the November 2000 issue of Christian Order:

“I listened to that woman for four hours and she had my hair standing on end. Everything she said has been fulfilled to the letter. You would think she was the world’s greatest prophet, but she was no prophet. She was merely exposing the step-by-step battle plan of Communist subversion of the Catholic Church. She explained that of all the world’s religions, the Catholic Church was the only one feared by the Communists, for it was its only effective opponent. The whole idea was to destroy, not the institution of the Church, but rather the Faith of the people, and even use the institution of the Church, if possible, to destroy the Faith through the promotion of a pseudo-religion: something that resembled Catholicism but was not the real thing. Once the Faith was destroyed, she explained that there would be a guilt complex introduced into the Church…. to label the ‘Church of the past’ as being oppressive, authoritarian, full of prejudices, arrogant in claiming to be the sole possessor of truth, and responsible for the divisions of religious bodies throughout the centuries. This would be necessary in order to shame Church leaders into an ‘openness to the world,’ and to a more flexible attitude toward all religions and philosophies. The Communists would then exploit this openness in order to undermine the Church.”

(I looked up Rod’s archives – he no longer has links to older issues in the archive, he just lists content)

    • RCA Victor,

What really gets me is the number of priests who say that they recognise the issues, want to preach orthodoxy (and do, at least up to a point), will wear cassocks all day and do all the secondary “Catholic” things, but – despite paying lip service to acknowledging the liturgical devastation around them – continue to say the new Mass, and even defend it. It really is a puzzle.

      • Editor,

I’d have to say that fear is governing their bottom line: fear of their bishops, and fear of their bishop’s spies in their parishes, who will report them if things get too traditional…..

          • Editor,

You would think, but fear of Judgement would indicate a supernaturally-oriented mentality…the lack of which would indicate, in turn, that the Traditional Mass hasn’t entirely sunk in yet….

  6. I have given this book to a young novus ordo priest and he is now very interested in learning to say the traditional Mass:- https://www.cenacle.co.uk/treasure-tradition-the-ultimate-guide-to-the-latin-mass.html Please pray for him that he’ll be given the opportunity. It’s an excellent book, non-polemical and non-controversial. I find it’s sometimes better to give a book rather than get involved in long discussions.
As for the TLM, I have to confess that I was getting a bit distracted at Mass last Sunday because of all the crying babies and restless young children. I had to tell myself that this was good and a sign of life and the future, that the Mass I attend has many young, large families. The novus ordo is in the dim and distant past for me, but my recollection was of ageing and increasingly sparse congregations. The NO will eventually implode of its own accord.

    • WF,

That’s wonderful news about that priest!

I think the Novus Ordo has already imploded, actually – and the Church along with it. The question in my mind is, what will the enemies of the Church devise to replace it? Certainly not the Traditional Mass. More like a “Mass” for Protestants, followed by a “Mass” for Muslims, followed by a “Mass” for human “dignity” in general, followed by…

    • Pat,

Thank you for posting that link, which I hadn’t seen.

By protestantising the Mass in the sixties, the popes have already introduced a new religion, with question marks over the validity of more and more Masses. If the correct matter and form are used, then a particular Mass may be “valid” but that is the lowest possible denominator. We want nourishment from the meat we buy at the local butcher’s, not just that it is free of poison. This latest suggestion – to change the matter – would certainly invalidate the Consecration.

It’s been a downward spiral since the introduction of the new Mass. Those who continue to attend it, may hold their heads up high as supporters and enablers of the liturgical revolution. God help them.
