Archbishop: If an unmarried teacher became pregnant, might be quite exciting for the children (and he’s not kidding)

Yesterday, the Guardian posted this tawdry little attempt to attack Catholic education.

The author, Peter Wilby, makes no attempt whatsoever to hide his utter contempt for the Church. Although he seems unable to find a viable target for his spite, despite his very best efforts.

Indeed, the interviewee, Archbishop Malcolm McMahon (right) is quoted in the interview as saying:

“You do this for a living, do you? You ask questions based on inaccurate information?”

The evident hauteur is all the more amusing as it appears to completely go over Wilby’s head.

The other thing clear from the interview is that Archbishop McMahon does not put forward any valid arguments, reasons, or explanation against Wilby’s line of questioning. Of course there are excellent answers to his questions, but the Archbishop seems to either be ignorant of them, or above communicating them to a journalist. Of course it would not be beyond the ken of Guardian journalists to edit the interview in a way which shows the worst of what was said, but it is still hugely disappointing that an opportunity to engage with the culture is so obviously missed. Net result? Readers of the Guardian will no doubt be further confirmed in their prejudice, Catholic schools and education are further marginalised and seen as isolationist and in need of “modernising”.

Wilby does his level best to stir the lefty hatred:

though discrimination has long been outlawed, the church hierarchy now feels threatened by an increasingly secular society. They defend their schools fiercely.

Oh were only that the truth Peter!

A new document from the Catholic Education Service (CES) shows just how wrong Wilby is in this regard. The hierarchy is in full capitulation to secular society! It is in full appeasement mode! It is DESPERATE to shed any vestige of Catholic truth and seeks only to be accepted.

This atrocious document actually uses papal tweets as a source whilst completely failing to state Catholic teaching on sexuality in order to provide an appropriate context. Surely the document ought to be empowering Catholic teachers to stick to the Catechism rather than pandering to LGBT as a poor oppressed victim group?

All bullying should be zero tolerance so why do we need to pay special attention to particular minority groups? Why single out sexual orientation over poverty, weight, political or religious views or even how cool any individual is perceived to be? Surely a Catholic approach, emphasis individuality and equal dignity deals with these issues in a catechetical way?

What can possibly motivate this direction if it is not pandering to the PC brigade and signalling a full abandonment of Catholic principles?

Please read the document. I’m furious. It’s Stonewall propaganda with a Catholic label on it. It is utter tripe.

Most essentially, I feel that our hierarchy don’t really believe what they stand for. They almost seem shocked when we, the laity, hold to Christ’s teachings or express concern at their next radical step towards appeasement and secularisation. They are constantly on the move, desperately seeking the glory of acceptance from the establishment.

Is it mere coincidence how this document from our bishops appears to mirror this document from the Church of England, three years ago?

Many of us regularly express concern that the Catholic establishment seem to want to follow down the same road as the Anglican Church, despite the fact that, by their own admission, that road is only leading them to assured self-destruction. This document from the CES really does nothing to abate such concerns!

One thing seems abundantly clear: the comments made by Dame Louise Casey last autumn before the select committee about homophobic Catholic schools must be driving this. I would suggest that the CES are bending over backwards to appease and accommodate DfE policy in order to secure the abolition of the 50% cap on admissions for new schools. As long as any new Catholic school is a full vehicle of the state to “queer” the next generation, then Whitehall will be happy and keep the money flowing.

From my experience in education as a parent and a foundation governor, I think most Catholic schools (head teachers and governors) consider that, as 90% of their funding comes from the state, they have no alternative had better do what the state says. My experience is that they have very little idea what Catholic education is or should be, and so it isn’t capitulating much to just keep your head down and do your best to accommodate the secular agenda. As for independents, most of their income comes from fee paying secularists and secularised Catholics so they conform in the hope of not losing their income base

This document certainly convinces me of one thing:

The CES is utterly unfit for purpose.   Source

With the above report coming to my attention hot on the heels of this report of the Head Teacher in a pretend Catholic school in Falkirk apologising for offending the “LGBT +++++++++  community” it is becoming clearer by the nano-second that “Catholic schools” are a joke. I can’t wait for the day when cowardly Heads like the Falkirk guy are summarily sacked, and the entire hierarchy of the UK forced to resign and spend the rest of their lives in prayer and penance.  And I kid you not when I say that, in my considered opinion, a bishop with Bishop McMahon’s views is a danger to the young: take a look at that headline again, check out his acceptance of sex education in schools – and feel free to tell me if you disagree…

For the record, I’ve just emailed the Head of St Mungo’s, in Falkirk, to alert him to this discussion, and I have also sent the link to Archbishop McMahon, with a not remotely deferential message.

  1. Question. Why does an Archbishop or any Catholic Churchmen even give the Gaurdian the time of day . Do they not know Catholics do not read the Gaurdian even I in my small intellect I know that . As far as the Alphabet S.S. Squad are concerned they wont give an inch as unfortunately most of them are narcissistic to the core . Went up to vote today and I think I dodged voting for The Homosexual Brigade my God though -The -Snottery – Nose -Pickers – are out in strength. Its the first time in my life that I was not going to vote,my reason being that the very small turnout would send a message to The Fuhrer but I think that would have been in vain . As regards the apology to the L.G.B.T.Q.X.Y.Z. surely it’s time that we stood up to this lot and told it like it really is.Ed I know you sensored me for going off topic but have you read of the P.R.E.P. drug that is being given out to Practicing Homosexuals at £ 450 a time to TRY and prevent the spread of A.I.D.S. This drug is going to cost the NHS a fortune and the Medical Profession are not even sure if it will have positive results.

    • The NHS supplying that drug at that cost when the NHS is strapped for cash is a complete disgrace. They’re talking about refusing operations to smokers yet as long as it’s sexually transmitted diseases, they’ll pay whatever it takes to treat those people. That is a disgrace.

Nobody, least of all Catholic priests, teachers and bishops, are going to stand up to the LGBT + brigade. Everyone’s terrified of them. You’d think they were a huge majority but they’re not, they’re a tiny fraction of the population, yet they rule the roost.

      • Lily,

You are right that these homosexuals are a tiny fraction of the population. The last census showed that they amount to 1.7% right across the LGBT+ spectrum. That’s all. Yet they are such a dominant influence everyone’s terrified of offending them. It’s ludicrous.

  2. It’s completely disgraceful that any Catholic, let alone an archbishop, would think it “exciting” for the children in a Catholic school if an unmarried teacher got pregnant.

I just wonder why these men don’t just resign. They can’t be happy living a double life, can they? They are living a lie, but why?

    • Michaela,

They don’t resign because they’d have to find a job that would keep them in the lifestyle to which they’ve become accustomed. No mystery there.

  3. That really is disgraceful but not too surprising these days, as churchmen have lost the plot completely.

As for the headmaster of the Falkirk school, he is a wimp. He’d be more honest resigning and applying for a job in a non-denominational school instead of being a monumental hypocrite by pretending to run a Catholic school.

Why don’t the parents rise up in protest? I know that’s a silly question, since they’re all in the same boat, lacking true Catholic faith and morals. But God will not be mocked much longer.

  4. We who use the internet know that Homosexual Blogging Sites are only one click away. I can honestly say that not once have I been on one nor have I the desire to . The reason I say so is that I go on many Catholic Blogs where ( without doubt.) one or two Homosexuals will be on peddling that Homophobia thing ( whatever that means ) . You just can’t now disagree or dislike anyone’s way of life ( except Catholicism of course) without being called a bigot. Now of course you cannot turn on the TV of which I do not now except for sport but there they are kissing full on just after 6 in the evening. I was over at my Daughters when I saw this on seemingly Emerdale but now without the farm ( what happened did all the cows get foot and mouth) when I told her to switch that garbage off . She replied that they were just G-Y and doing no harm . God Help Us.

  5. Catholic schools are definitely a joke. It’s not possible for the parents to do anything because they are victims of the system themselves, they haven’t been taught the Catholic faith and so how are they supposed to know that it’s not being taught to their children?

The chances are, the Falkirk Head is in the same boat. If he’s a post-Vatican II baby, he won’t have been taught the faith either and will be even more clueless about morality; and the bishops are a lost cause. They are worldly men who don’t actually believe in God. Their god is secularism.

Until the Consecration of Russia takes place, there can’t be any real improvement – the faith has been lost and more people are converting to Islam than ever before.

    • Josephine,

If he’s a post-Vatican II baby, he won’t have been taught the faith either and will be even more clueless about morality…….. the faith has been lost

That is so true and acknowledging this is important.

Recently I reflected on the public vote in Ireland which sanctioned the introduction of “gay marriage”. I remember one of the incompetent Archbishops interviewed in the wake of the vote (his name escapes me at present).

He was shaking his head and wondering aloud how this could have happened. The reason is, of course, that the people who voted are not Catholic in any meaningful sense whatsoever. (I am sure the Archbishop knows this full well). That’s how it happened.

It is the same when we hear of incidents like the one in the Falkirk School. Most likely, the Head, faculty and pupils are not Catholic in any meaningful sense. They are happy to go through the motions and have some Catholic leaflets lying about but, just as soon as someone objects, they fall over themselves to ‘get rid’. Their only concern is ensuring there is “no trouble”, not ensuring an authentic Catholic education is delivered.

      • Gabriel Syme,

I SO agree with you – most Catholics are Catholics only in name – that’s now very clear. It’s dreadful that this is also the case with head teachers and bishops.

  6. I think the fact that there are so few comments on this thread, at this stage, having been published for a day now, is testimony to the fact that – as I’ve been told more than once recently by various readers and bloggers – most informed Catholics don’t expect anything of so-called Catholic schools these days and certainly don’t expect anything remotely Catholic from any member of the hierarchy or senior teaching staff in “Catholic” schools. I fully understand that, and if Archbishop McMahon and Mr Phee are reading this, you ought, both of you, to be hanging your heads in shame. What a nerve to be making a living out of the Church while undermining and opposing her teachings at every turn. Shame on you.

You, Mr Phee, should have not allowed yourself to be led by an ignorant, worldly, 18 year old student, but, instead, should have led HIM to the truth. For that neglect, you will one day be called to account and it’ll be a very tough interview. Trust me on this.

You, Archbishop McMahon – words fail. You would do well to reflect on the warning of St John Chrysostom that “the walls of Hell are paved with the skulls of bishops.” In the interests of accuracy, of course, since Modernists do tend to nitpick the daftest things, I must draw your attention to the fact that some attribute that saying to other saints, and some have “the floor of Hell” instead of the wall. Take your pick. When you’re staring at those skulls, though, you won’t much care whether you’re staring at the floor or the wall. Again, trust me on this…

    • Editor,

There’s no way Mr Phee will hang his head in shame, or the archbishop. They really are shameless about their abuse of their positions. God forgive them.

  7. Here in the States, I’d say that the vast majority of Novus Ordo “Catholic” schools are merely more reasonably-priced private schools with a humanist curriculum. Parents who can’t afford $40,000/yr. tuition, room and board for one of the top 25 high schools are only too happy to opt for $5-10,000/yr, while they are reassured by their Modernist headmaster that their progeny are receiving a top-notch education. “Top-notch,” of course, translates as the latest PC insanity, denial of reason and reality….it seems insanity has become quite prestigious these days. I’m guessing that is because insanity is portrayed as compassionate and enlightened behavior….and makes people feel good about themselves.

    • RCA Victor,

The “Catholic” schools here also have a humanist curriculum. It’s blatant. They still talk the talk about the Catholic “ethos” and so on, but they just do not walk the walk. They’re a waste of space and I mean that, literally.

      • MM,

As I once described it in an article published in The Herald (in the days before I was banned) Catholic school religious education is nothing more than humanism with hymns. The rest of the curriculum is, as RCA Victor so aptly describes is, “a humanist curriculum”, designed to (as he, again so aptly puts it) “make people feel good about themselves.”

I wish I could have five minutes with some of these pseudo-Catholic-educators – I’d see to it that they never felt good about themselves again – EVER!

    • Therese,

That’s a disgrace, what’s going on in USA schools. That Principal was a real devil. It just beggars belief that parents are not awake enough to realise what damage is being done to their children.

    • The Principal at the start of that video is demonic. He really is.

It is frightening to think that these people, who would have once been classed as criminals, are now in charge of young minds. It makes me shudder.

    • Therese,

I’ve now watched the video and it really does have the WOW! factor. The whole thing kept my attention throughout – although I do think he could be describing schools here in the UK as well. We may not be AS bad but we’re getting there!

Michael Matt’s remarks about home-schooling at the end have encouraged me to launch a homeschooling is an option, thread, to showcase some of the programmes available so watch this space! Or, more accurately, watch the space at the top of the blog!

      • Editor

Yes, it’s a terrible indictment of the modern world. The chilling hatred with which that vile man tells them to “go to Hell” and says that that’s where the murdered babies are, is really shocking. One positive in this video is the courage and dedication of the young people who were standing up to that truly ghastly “assistant principal”. They are the future of the Church, and of civilisation, and they have some very hard times ahead. God bless them and strengthen them in their seemingly impossible task. God knows they’re getting little support from hierarchy. Haha. Joke. The best we can expect at this present time is that they won’t actually be criticised for being “confrontational”.

        • Therese,

I agree – the young people were impressive (although out of sight of the camera!) They’ve clearly grasped the basics about human life, whereas the “educator” was uncouth and uneducated in any meaningful sense of the word. He should be in the picture below – he’s that ignorant…

  8. I’m afraid I’m one of those who think there’s no point wasting time discussing Catholic schools. They are a joke, nothing more. If we had a healthy Church, that bishop would be defrocked and the head teacher would be sacked on the spot.
